Pico dos Barcelos ViewpointA viewpoint with a privileged view over Santo António and a panoramic view of 360º
Its designation comes from the fact that the first settlers come from Barcelos town, in Continental Portugal. Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint lays at 335 meters of altitude and it is the most attractive point of the parish offering you a privileged view over Santo António and a 360º panorama over Funchal. Until 1921, it was an unknown place for most of Funchal population but with the construction of an access road in that year it become “a must” stop point for daytrips and tourists.
It offers a privileged view over a natural and humanized landscape that extends from Ponta do Garajau to Cabo Girão, including the mountains of the Central Mountain Massif and the Desertas Islands, which rise on the horizon. The viewpoint has several areas of leisure, green spaces, restaurants and shops with local crafts. In 1940, the Pico dos Barcelos Cross was erected, commemorating the centenary of the Foundation and Restoration of Portugal and as a symbol of the devotion to the Christian faith.
