Santo António mountains are rich in biodiversity, being a privileged place for birdwatching

Madeira has a huge variety of marine and terrestrial flying fauna, some are endemic and many more nest here. The mountainous area of Santo António is an excellent destination for birdwatching thanks to its location and its biodiversity. Here you can observe such birds as Berthelot’s Pipit (Anthus berthelotii), buzzard (Butteo butteo harterti) and kestrel (Falco tinnunculus canariensis), as well as seabird colonies such as Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus). The plain swift (Apus unicolor) as well as the Macaronesian subspecies of sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus granti) can be also found in the area. The cliffs at the northern end of the parish and the central mountainous massif are the only known breeding area in the world of the pelagic bird endemic to Madeira, the Madeira’s petrel (Pterodroma madeira).
